UDF protests encroachment of MLA's land
8 Feb 2010, 0821 hrs IST

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala: Opposition UDF has termed as `politically motivated' encroachment of land in possession of M V Shreyamskumar MLA and son of M P Veerendrakumar, heading the JD-S faction in Kerala, in Wayanad district by workers of pro-CPI(M) Adivasi Kshema Samiti (AKS).

In a statement here, UDF convener P P Thankachan said AKS action was nothing but `political revenge' against Shreyamskumar, who switched to UDF after the JD-S unit in the state split last year.

About 30 tribal families under AKS banner had Sunday encroached upon 6.4 hectares of land at Krishnagiri in Sulthan Bathery, in Shreyamskumar's possession.

The encroachers also erected huts in the land. According to AKS district secretary P Vasudevan, this was the second phase of the Samiti's agitation to find and distribute `excess land' in possession of big land owners.

Thankachan alleged the encroachment was with the full support of local CPI-M leaders and police which amounted to 'gross misuse' of power. The land was given to Shreyamskumar's grandfather by the erstwhile Madras Presidency in 1942 for agricultural purposes.

He asked the state government to take steps to evict the encroachers. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala also condemned the CPI-M action in Wayanad.

Shreyamskumar said in Wayanad that the Samiti's action would be challenged in the court.
