New York Finally, the film industry hit by recession and a recent strike has a reason to smile. New York , the latest Bollywood release, is raking it in at the box office.

The cinema halls are witnessing many footfalls and bums on the seats as the Yashraj Films ’ ‘New York’ is turning out to be quite a crowd puller. In its opening weekend, the film has grossed Rs 35 crore, the maximum opening any film has got this year so far.

A press release issued by YRF said: “Yashraj Films ended 2008 with its highest grossing film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi , and has started 2009 with a bang.”

Not just in India, the film has opened to a heartening response in overseas market as well.

It opened at the tenth spot in the UK, while it rocketed straight to the third position on the Australian charts. Moreover, the film has emerged as the highest weekend earner of the year in UAE.

Released in over 900 screens worldwide, ‘New York’ has got mostly positive reviews from critics, though almost everyone agrees that the film is a bit long. Starring John Abraham , Katrina Kaif , Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan , the film tells the story of three friends whose lives are altered forever by events following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US. The movie, directed by Kabir Khan , is largely being appreciated for its theme that neither condones terrorism, nor indulges in America-bashing.
